HEAR ANIMATION

This year’s Anifilm theme “Hear animation” means that the festival’s non-competition programme will focus on music and sound in animated films. The festival will screen classic films such as Pink Floyd: The Wall (dir. A. Parker, 1982) with unforgettable animated sequences by Gerald Scarfe, hard-boiled anthology film Heavy Metal (dir. G. Potterton, 1981) or jazzy The Triplets of Belleville (dir. S. Chomet, 2003). But the festivalgoers can also look forward to contemporary projects combining live music with animation such as The 4 Seasons Music and Animation combining Vivaldi’s popular composition with animation by renowned animators under artistic direction by famous director Koji Yamamura.

Anifilm will also pay tribute to Czech composers of film music such as Zdeněk Liška, Jiří Kolafa and Luboš Fišer. So apart from the latest and best animated films, Liberec and the festival visitors can look forward to special musical performances. The festivalgoers will also have a chance to try to make film soundtracks themselves and to meet many renowned guests such as sound engineer Ivo Špalj. Author of dozens of soundtracks for major Czech animated films. In honor of this long-time collaborator of Jan Švankmajer, the festival will present a selection of his favorite films and the festival will award him the Lifetime Achievement Award for animated film.

FEATURE FILMS AT ANIFILM

This competition category will screen the meditative Latvian film Away by Gintis Zilbalodis who conceived it in the style of computer adventure. Directors Zabou Breitman and Eléa Gobbé-Mévellec will present their drama from Taliban-controlled Kabul The Swallows of Kabul – the film was praised at the Cannes IFF and won an award in Annecy. Japanese film On-Gaku: Our Sound by Kenji Iwaisawa tells a humorous story about a formation and disbandment of a non-traditional high school band. Hand-drawn Indian romantic film Bombay Rose by Gitanjali Rao was screened in Venice and won an award in Chicago. Romanian film Marona’s Fantastic Tale by Anca Damian explores dog love.

Dogs also play an important role in Latvian film Jacob, Mimmi and the Talking Dogs and in the co-production family film Fritzi: A Revolutionary Tale taking place during the fall of the Berlin Wall. Animals also star in another praised film named The Bears’ Famous Invasion of Sicily in which a bear clan tries to rescue the son of their king. Along with mysterious old monkey and a young monkey boy, French directors Jean-François Laguionie and Xavier Picard will take us on The Prince’s Voyage and Japanese anime Children of the Sea by Ayumu Watanabe will tell us the story of a young girl exploring the secret of the world under water.

 NATIONAL COMPETITION

National competition Czech Horizon has established a tradition at ANIFILM and each year, there are more more films entering the competition. That means that a stricter selection process had to be implemented in order to create quality competition blocks that will present the best of contemporary Czech animation. This year, it will be the first time when three feature films will compete From total number of 295 submitted films, the final competition includes 68. In the short films category, you can look forward to new films by Pavel Koutský, Alexandra Májová or Vojtěch Domlátil. The student film category includes films made by students of the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín, Miroslav Ondříček Film Academy in Písek and the University of Ostrava. Competition section for television animation includes animation mainly for children who can look forward to new series produced by the Czech Television (by filmmakers such as Maria Procházková, Patr Friedl and Pavel Kubant), the pilot episode of Overboard! by Filip Pošivač and Barbora Valecká and a new episode of Hungry Bear Tales called Truffles! (dir. Kateřina Karhánková, Alexandra Májová). Also sections for commissioned work and music videos include interesting animations by filmmakers such as Martin Máj and Martin Živocký. It is worth noting that unlike the international competition, Czech Horizon is judged by the Council of Animated film composed of more than 100 Czech film professionals and critics. They will pick the winners before the festival and this year, they will also pick the overall best animated film from all the five national competition sections.

The visual identity of Anifilm 2020 is created by Slovak duo Michaela Mihalyiová and Dávid Štumpf. You may know Michaela’s unmistakeable artistic style from her successful short films and exercises ♥ City ♥, FOODHere and Here (Tu a tady) and A Date (Rande). She attracted attention with her film Sh_t Happens which she co-directed with Dávid Štumpf. This absurd comedy competed at this year’s Biennale in Venice and celebrated success at festivals all around the world. In the case of Anifilm, Michaela will once again join forces with Dávid – known for his acclaimed films Cowboyland (Země kovbojů) and  Woo-Hoo – and together, they will create the festival’s new visual identity.

Their explanation says it all: “Anifilm is moving to a new city and we all are moving with it! That’s why we decided to create a visual style as colourful and joyful as it gets - to make the process of moving more enjoyable. We will introduce various odd and peculiar characters that will help us move. As for the jingle, we can now say that it will be full of music, dance and animation as the festival itself. It will be funky!” https://michaelamihalyi.com/
